Pranshu Tiwari, MS'21 MS'21

Using Machine Learning to Invent and Innovate

“I felt honored when Northeastern University gave me admission,” says Pranshu Tiwari, a 2021 Master of Science in Operations Research graduate. “I never thought it would happen, and as a result, I think today I feel much more confident than I did five years ago.”

Before commencing his Northeastern experience, Tiwari spent nearly fifteen years at IBM. Beginning as a lead consultant, Tiwari climbed the ranks through his thought-provoking research and innovative use of machine learning to achieve the title of Data Scientist. His work at IBM was groundbreaking in the Artificial Intelligence field, with Tiwari gathering an impressive 18 patents registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

However, Tiwari is no stranger to ambition—even with nearly two dozen patents to his name, he still strived to make a lasting impact in his field. With that in mind, Tiwari decided to “take a leap of faith” and leave his position at IBM to enroll in Northeastern’s M.S. in Operations Research. “I saw the course content of Northeastern, and the way they teach, they give importance to understanding the concepts rather than just displaying it…[other universities] didn’t have the depth at the mathematical angle that Northeastern has.

Crediting Professor Stuart Brorson and Professor Shantanu Jha with helping him find success within the program, Tiwari utilized his Northeastern education and experiential learning background to continue applying his innovative strategies to AI—helping him achieve the esteemed IBM Master Inventor title in late 2021. “IBM honored me with the Master Inventor, which is an honorable position…it came seven months after leaving Northeastern [and] let me continue my innovation.”

Currently, Tiwari is looking to give back to the university that opened many doors for him in his career. “[My current company] Schneider Electric has a relationship with Northeastern…we have two or three co-op positions and the opportunity to do an industry Ph.D.” Tiwari fully plans to take advantage of this partnership and become a Double Husky, further integrating the relationship between Northeastern alumni and contemporary technological developments. “For a long-term career, the fundamentals which have been inscribed in you through Northeastern and its course content, you can create your own career.”
