Diversifying Your Portfolio One Property at a Time

“People that come in with the hesitations of owning a home and the problems that come with it,they come in with a different perspective,” says Vidhi Kankaria, a 2018 graduate of the College of Science and the College of Social Sciences and Humanities. Kankaria, who splits her time between India and New York, strives to use her entrepreneurial sense to make a positive impact on the real estate market. “There is a large demand for rentals in an area with high economic activity…[we help] with safe assets that have potential for steady returns.”

Combining her family’s real estate history in India, her experiences listing her Boston-based apartment on AirBnB during times of high-demand for hospitality in the city, and what she learned working on Wall Street, Kankaria began her own real estate investment firm, Discreit in 2022 . With a focus on fractional investments of properties in cities that generate a healthy
passive income, Kankaria is looking to share her findings with the world and help others obtain the same success she has.

In a short year-and-a-half, Discreit has grown from its Boston roots—since its founding, Kankaria has been able to expand the company from coast to coast, emphasizing large metropolitans and markets in cities like New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles. “The demand for homes in [these cities] is greater than the supply for homes…[owning rentals is] a great source of income, but not accessible to all people. At Discreit, we want to make access to these assets barrierless.”

Despite all of her success and the rapid growth of her company, Kankaria credits Northastern as the foundational piece that shaped her outlook on both entrepreneurship and how to navigate the waters of her company’s industry. “I owe everything to the university and the city,” she says while gleaming. “These resouces at Northeastern, like the ability to speak with my professors,
they could counterbalance the excitement for what I was doing while coming up with criticisms for it. It was through these opportunities that I could surround myself with the people that helped me shape my ideas.”

Not only was Northeastern her entrepreneurial catalyst, Kankaria used her university experience and her “very helpful co-ops that surrounded [her] with people in the industry” to continue growing Discreit, with the hopes of making real estate obtainable for the average citizen and streamlining the process of portfolio diversity while providing a stable return of investment. With all of that in mind, if Kankaria and Discreit are the future, we are in good hands.

I think co-ops are a great place to be, because that’s where you make
