Volunteer Spotlight: Young Alumni Advisory Board
We asked Liz Barno, a member of the Young Alumni Advisory Board, why she volunteers and stays engaged with the Northeastern community.
This past year you were featured on the Forbes 30 under 30 list in 2017 as well as Beta Boston’s 25 Most Innovative People under 25 list in 2015! How did your Northeastern experience and network influence your career success?
I have been so thankful for all of the experiences and connections I made at Northeastern that have propelled my successes forward. Northeastern allowed me to be flexible as a student, with the breadth of what I studied, the internship experiences I pursued, all while living on the city campus for five years. I rely much more on the “life lessons” from my experience at Northeastern than the name of my degree or major. In my field and professional pursuits, my critical thinking, communication, and strategic planning skills are incredibly important, and I credit the sum of all of my classes, internships, co-ops, and on- and off-campus experiences for helping me to build these skills.
What do you do in Boston? What do you like to do in your free time?
In my professional life, I am the Community Director of Greentown Labs, the nation’s largest cleantech startup incubator. I joined Greentown as the first employee when I graduated Northeastern in May of 2013 and I take a lot of pride in the community I have built and the companies I have supported. My evenings are often spent at different events at Greentown Labs and around the Boston entrepreneurship and energy ecosystem. When I’m not working on Greentown and my career, I love to get out of the city – my boyfriend and I are prolific travelers, even if it is just for a hike in New England with our favorite pup, Sophie.
What was your favorite event this past year?
The Office of Alumni Relations and the Young Alumni Advisory Board collaborated to put on a killer Boat Cruise for alumni as part of Homecoming Week. In addition to cruising around Boston Harbor on a beautiful evening with old friends, Vice President Rick Davis surprised everyone with an unexpected open bar and emceed the entertainment for the night.
You consider yourself a skilled community builder and networker. For alumni looking to connect with the Northeastern network, where do you recommend they start?
Start with your friends from Northeastern! Personally, the relationships I formed and the people I met while on campus will remain a part of my life forever. Get a few friends together and attend an alumni event. Often, events are on campus, thread Northeastern values through the activities, and include an element of nostalgia that is always fun to enjoy with former classmates and friends.
