Last spring, more than 50 alumni and students gathered for a Connecting Huskies to Huskies event in the Northeastern University Alumni Center promoting networking and professional development opportunities.
Trisha Griffin-Carty, MA’73, presented a humorous, informative, and interactive presentation, “The Power of Storytelling,” as the keynote address, instructing attendees on where to find their stories, how to construct them, and when to implement them. Attendees heard stories of how individuals faced the challenges of starting their own business, adjusting to a new culture while living in a foreign country, and making the unpopular decision the workplace.
Younger students were able to take what they had learned and use it in the mock interview session. Older students and alumni were able to see how they could utilize these skills to secure their next job or promotion in the “Moving Up and Moving Out” session.
Later in the evening, Samina Karim, associate professor of entrepreneurship and innovation in the D’Amore-McKim School of Business, presented “Project Rooster,” which mapped out the steps one needs to take to become their own advocate when seeking advancement within or outside their company. She also advised the group to seek mentors outside their organization and be open to opportunities they may not have considered.
