Volunteer Spotlight: Young Alumni Advisory Board
We asked Sydney Stewart, a member of the Young Alumni Advisory Board, why she volunteers and stays engaged with the Northeastern community.
How did your Northeastern experience impact your motivation to volunteer and give back?
I love Northeastern and if it was not for the expansive community, I would not be where I am today. I had amazing co-ops and met motivational mentors and peers along the way that helped me find my passion. My brother once told me that when you go to college you need to take advantage of everything the university has to offer. And with that advice, I was able to have the best 5 Years of my life. I was an Ujima Global Leader, communications major, and met some of my best friends by joining Alpha Kappa Alpha (the Iota Gamma Chapter). I had the opportunity to live in New York City at age 19 and study abroad in London. I believe these experiences are uniquely Northeastern and I was always taught to give back to what helped you become who you are as a person.
What do you do in New York City? How do you stay connected to Northeastern outside of Boston?
I am living in Harlem but working in Stamford, Conn. as a production assistant for the production management team at ITV America (Leftfield Pictures). I am currently assisting on three productions, Forged in Fire (History Channel), Breakthrough with Lewis Howes (Facebook watch), and Godzilla Shark for Shark week.
I love to travel and spend time with my family and friends during my free time. I feel as if I am always connected to Northeastern and am friends with many fellow alumni in the city. We meet up and connect with other Northeastern folks who have moved to the area at least once a month. I am also still very active in my sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha Incorporated.
How do you think the YAAB can help engage fellow alumni?
I think that the YAAB can help engage fellow alumni by sharing their Northeastern Story. I love connecting with alumni and encouraging them to stay involved with clubs and organizations post-grad.
For alumni looking to connect with the Northeastern network, where do you recommend they start?
I recommend that they start with their friends that the met at Northeastern. Because of the New York City Community, I am constantly expanding my network and connecting with other alumni from different years here in NYC. I also love connecting with alumni on social media (Follow Northeastern Alumni on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn).
