Mayor Huntington of Avenue (MoHA) is a program founded in tradition and school spirit, starting around 1956 and continuing to present day. Although Mayors used to be elected through “buying votes” and fundraising, they are now grounded in forwarding Northeastern’s mission and are dedicated to creating a more spirited student body.
The Mayor of Huntington Avenue was initially founded and run by the Husky Key Society, and it was often referred to as a “mock election,” with candidates having a flair for the dramatic; previous mayoral events would feature elephants on the quad and helicopter photo opportunities. Mayors would also frequent sporting events and student rallies, as well as the annual election, parade of candidates, and inaugural ball.
Although MoHA still has some traditions of the past, like dressing in an iconic red suit, the program is set on being a representative of the whole student body, giving them a voice in the university, forming peer-to-peer relationships in the process. The Mayor continues to appear at large events like Convocation, Giving Day, and Graduation, as well as putting on their own events dedicated to fostering community and collaboration across the network.

The current Mayor is Sam Iannone, DMBS’27. Sam is from the Bay Area where he grew up around great food, Silicon Valley technology, and a big sense of community that he brings to Northeastern every day. Although MoHA is his focus, he is also stewards Beta Theta Pi, is a Husky Ambassador and Social Media Ambassador, and drums in Pep Band.
When asked why Northeastern, Sam says, “To me, it’s the greatest school in the world. Northeastern gives students a real shot at the world—launching startups, studying abroad, meeting brilliant people, and gaining hands-on experience. It’s a beautiful campus with an unbeatable community and an energy for innovation, entrepreneurship, and AI that’s hard to match.”
“MOHA is pure joy. I get to celebrate the best parts of Northeastern: hyping up student groups at games, meeting alumni doing incredible things, and connecting with students chasing big dreams. It’s all about school spirit, and for me, that means making this special community feel even closer.” – Sam Iannone, DMSB’27
