    This short video serves as an introduction to the key ideas of this module: the hybrid trap, the industry lifecycle and industry characteristics, and the determinants of first mover advantage.

     

    This is a clip from the documentary “Who Killed the Electric Car,” a dramatic example of how the incumbents’ lack of vision and commitment to persevere and succeed with innovation. It also shows how much resistance to change exists within large organizations that prevents them from reacting timely to take full advantage of opportunities.

     

    Why do most efforts to bridge old and new technology miss the mark? This video explains the concept of the hybrid trap, using a prime example the content of the video “Who Killed the Electric Car” to explain why hybrid products can become a trap for incumbents. It also introduces a classical framework to explain if innovators will profit from their innovations and discusses how the entry of Tesla to the electric car industry fits that model.

     

    It is widely believed that when a new industry is created prompted by innovations, firms that enter early have an advantage over those which come later. This is not always correct. This video explains the concept of first mover advantage (FMA) and explains why FMA should not be expected in all industries and contexts.
