Letter to Class of 2020 on Commencement

Dear Class of 2020,

It feels like forever since we all had our lives uprooted by the pandemic. But since then, you have never left our thoughts. Due to lowered COVID-19 restrictions and the quick pace of vaccinations in the U.S., we are preparing to hold a Commencement for the Class of 2020 on Saturday, November 13, 2021. A full slate of programming will be built around this weekend to celebrate your achievements.

As you know, we have been working to devise a way to celebrate your Commencement properly. In the survey you received in February, your class voiced overwhelming support for holding an in-person ceremony with the fewest COVID-19 restrictions possible. And as we communicated in March, we settled on November 2021 as a time when we could join together safely with adequate time for everyone to make the necessary plans.

We are thankful to many of you who volunteered to join a planning committee. Members of the committee will convene on May 25 to continue the exciting work ahead of the November event.

We are pleased to share that the Class of 2020’s Commencement will be held in Matthews Arena, where you will be individually honored in a formal ceremony with your caps, gowns, and all the pomp and circumstance you deserve. The ceremony will be open to all former undergraduate and graduate students who completed their degrees between December 2019 and August 2020. And we can’t fathom holding a ceremony without your guests in attendance. To this end, we have a few requests:

Please stay tuned for additional updates as our planning continues. We look forward to celebrating with you in November.

Warm regards,
